• Thai Talipot Palm (Corypha Lecomtei) - Huge upward leaves reaching for the stratosphere

Thai Talipot Palm.  Magnificent, extremely rare in cultivation outside its native region of South East Asia.  Similar to Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera), but not as big (but still huge!). This is the shortest of all the Coryphas with only a trunk of up to 15 feet, but yes it still has massive leaves.  Even though still a large palm, this species from Southeast Asia and southern China is of considerably more moderate size than the other members of this genus, and the most cold hardy as well. It forms a moderately tall, solitary trunk, topped by a large crown of massive, circular, deep green, costapalmate leaves. Like all Corypha, every plant flowers only once with a very large terminal infloresecence that produces thousands of golfball-sized seeds. It tolerates cooler conditions than other Corypha and apart from tropical areas, it will also grow in some warm temperate places.

We are excited to be able to offer this rare and unusual palm for a limited time until supplies run out. Native to Thailand. This palm grows to be one of the largest in the world, with huge strongly upward arching leaves reaching for the stratosphere. This attractive palm will dominate any landscape. Incredibly strong tap root will penetrate any type of soil including clay hardpan (and including your plastic planting bag!).

Corypha is a rare and unusual class of monocarpic palms with only a few members, characterized by terminal inflorescence, which means they only generate flowers and seeds once in their lifetime and then die, usually at an age of 30-80 years. The most famous of these is the Talipot palm (Corypha umbraculifera), which has the largest inflorescence of any species in the plant kingdom, rising nearly 10 meters (33 feet) from the top of the plant and bearing several million flowers. Can be grown indoors almost anywhere when small due to its vigor, and size will be limited by constraint of the roots.  Growth is slow at first, providing many years of enjoyment.  Eventually it must be moved outside due to it's size. Probably will not tolerate frost.
